If you remove the cover/grate on the cowl there is lid that runs the length of the filter.
It's hinged, just give it a little pull and you can then remove the filter.

I do, but I've never experienced that issue with my car. I only have an issue with my car giving me a hard time with putting it into first gear and then some of the gears sticking when shifting.

To open the 2011 EVIC extended screens:

From the "Compass" screen on dash,
Hold the "up" button for 5 sec,
Then the "down" button.

My 1st 5000 miles were on my car in a month after I bought it. my 1 yr old RT has 52,000 miles on it and I get an oil change about every 6 weeks= every 6000 miles always use synthetic....but obviously I drive a lot andin very hot temperatures....
